22 June 2026 — Bedugul, Bali. Some restaurants source their ingredients. Orient Nine Restaurant grows them.
Handara Golf & Resort Bali is pleased to announce that Orient Nine Restaurant, its signature Southeast Asian restaurant in Bedugul, Bali, has been awarded the Silver Eco Climate Badge in the Restaurant category, achieving a score of 250. Presented by Eco Tourism Bali in partnership with Kopernik’s R&D Sustainable Lab, the certification is based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Criteria and the Green Restaurant Association standard.
Perched 1,142 meters above sea level within the cool highlands of a dormant volcanic crater, Orient Nine has quietly embraced a philosophy it has practiced since opening its doors: when a restaurant is this close to nature, it has a responsibility to honour it.
Just a short walk from the restaurant lies Handara’s permaculture garden, where herbs, leafy greens, edible flowers, and seasonal produce flourish in the mountain climate. Harvested each morning, many of these ingredients travel only a few meters before reaching the kitchen — a true farm-to-table journey measured in meters rather than miles, and in hours rather than days.

That connection to the land is reflected throughout the guest experience. Lighting crafted from recycled materials. Tea sourced from growers who cultivate the surrounding highlands. A menu celebrating Southeast Asian flavours — from Thai Beef Basil and Singapore Laksa to Sundanese Sate Maranggi — thoughtfully created around seasonal ingredients rather than those that are simply easiest to import.
None of these choices were made to earn a badge. The badge simply recognises a standard that has long guided the restaurant.
The Eco Climate Badge is awarded through an assessment of thirty criteria covering resource conservation, waste and pollution reduction, biodiversity protection, and meaningful contributions to local communities. The framework is designed to benchmark responsible hospitality businesses across Bali and the wider ASEAN region.
For guests, however, sustainability is experienced not through certification, but through the atmosphere itself. Dining at Orient Nine means enjoying authentic Southeast Asian cuisine surrounded by cool mountain air, overlooking Handara’s championship golf course, the volcanic crater ridge, and the peaceful highlands of Bedugul — a setting where the landscape becomes part of every meal.
The recognition builds upon Handara Golf & Resort Bali’s longstanding commitment to responsible hospitality. The resort is Travelife Certified, received the International Sustainability Award in 2023, was recognised as Asia’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility at the World Golf Awards 2025, and was also named Indonesia’s Best Sustainable Golf Resort the same year. Orient Nine’s Silver Eco Climate Badge extends that commitment from the fairways to the dining table, demonstrating that environmental stewardship is woven throughout every part of the guest experience.
“This badge belongs to everyone who chooses the more thoughtful path — the recycled material over the cheaper one, the local grower over the convenient supplier, the seasonal ingredient over the one that is easiest to source,” said Aliza Salviandra, President Director of Handara Golf & Resort Bali. “Orient Nine has always cooked with an understanding of where it stands, drawing from our own permaculture garden and the farming community around us. This recognition simply acknowledges a discipline that has always been part of who we are.”

Set within one of Bali’s most remarkable highland landscapes, Handara has never viewed sustainability as an initiative to launch, but as a responsibility inherited from the land itself. At Orient Nine Restaurant, every plate reflects that promise — harvested nearby, prepared with intention, and served amidst the cool mountain air that has defined Handara for generations. It is where the mountain and the table have never been separate, offering guests an authentic farm-to-table dining experience in the heart of Bedugul.
